MS Camped on a cell

手機實驗室裡工程師測試時經常使用的片語之一："手機camp上網路了沒？"

"手機camp上網路了沒？"

這句話到底什麼意思，筆者在四年前曾經天天聽到，卻沒有真正camped上這句話的技術內涵過，心理以為是大家都知道的常識，也不敢開口問客戶。

根據規格書[1]的解釋，當手機開機後，進行頻點掃瞄，從天線端所獲得品質最好的一組BCCH後，鎖定此BCCH以便獲取小區提供服務的過程，即是camped on a cell。

[Cell Selection如何運作]
1. MS尋找FCCH burst(FCCH使用F-burst，是在某頻率週期性發送的TS，一個GSM frame中只有一個F-burst當作FCCH)，取得頻率同步
2. 然後在相同頻率找到SCH burst，取得frame同步(即時間同步)(SCH使用S-burst，與F-burst相鄰TS，一個GSM frame中只有一個S-burst)
3. MS開始接收BCCH。(BCCH使用F-burst，在S-burst相鄰TS，一個GSM frame中有數個F-burst當作BCCH。)
4. 至此MS才能開始從不同BCCH中選擇最合適的小區。

有兩點值得注意：
1. 即使沒有SIM卡，不能撥打電話的MS也必須能camped on a cell，為何呢？因為MS無論有沒有SIM卡，都必須能提供"112"的緊急呼叫(美國可用的三頻手機，還必須支援"911"這組救命號碼)，因此必須能夠隨時camped on a cell。
所以對台灣的GSM用戶而言，緊急時，除了119/110以外，別忘了112是無須SIM卡、任何GSM手機開機就可以撥打的全球緊急救助號碼。

2. Camped on a cell只是MS單方面選擇最佳的網路與無線資源，在MS沒有送出Location Updating的要求之前，網路端不會知道有哪些MS駐留進來所屬的小區。此時的服務非常有限。

規格[1]還指出以下三點目的：
The purpose of camping on a cell in idle mode is threefold:

a) It enables the MS to receive system information from the PLMN.

b) If the MS wishes to initiate a call, it can do this by initially accessing the network on the control channel of the cell on which it is camped (with the exceptions defined in subclauses 3.5.3 and 3.5.4). <-- Location Updating之後才能開始撥號。 c) If the PLMN receives a call for the MS, it knows (in most cases) the registration area of the cell in which the MSis camped. It can then send a "paging" message for the MS on control channels of all the cells in the registration area. The MS will then receive the paging message because it is tuned to the control channel of a cell in that registration area, and the MS can respond on that control channel. <-- Location Updating之後才能被叫。

附圖是使用Qualcomm晶片的手機，在其螢幕的右上方或左上方，用戶可以看見一根招牌天線的圖樣以及象徵接收信號強度的指示，當出現任何接收強度時，表示手機已經camped on a cell了。

[心得]
Camped on a cell看來有兩種意義：
- 廣義是指MS選擇了一個cell，準備使用，但還未做Location Updating，未獲得授權使用，只能打緊急呼叫的狀態。

- 狹義是MS選擇了一個cell，提出Location Updating申請，也獲得授權使用各種服務的狀態。
